Dangote Refinery Outpaces US to Remain Europe’s Top Jet Fuel Supplier
Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has solidified its status as a major global exporter of premium aviation fuel, retaining its position as Europe’s largest jet fuel supplier for the second consecutive month and outstripping traditional energy giants like the United States.
Data compiled by commodities intelligence firm Kpler reveals that the 700,000-barrel-per-day (bpd) facility delivered over 400,000 tonnes of jet fuel to Europe in July.
The volume accounted for roughly 20 per cent of the continent’s 2.06 million tonnes of total jet fuel imports during the month, placing the Nigerian refiner ahead of long-standing suppliers from the U.S. and the Middle East.
July’s performance follows a historic benchmark in June, when the refinery exported a record 466,000 tonnes to Europe, marking the first time Nigeria displaced the United States as the region’s top jet fuel source.
Industry analysts view the sustained momentum as a structural shift in Atlantic Basin fuel trade. Dangote’s strategic location along the Lekki coastline, combined with its massive scale and modern processing technology, has disrupted established supply lines previously dominated by American, Middle Eastern, and Asian refiners.
The operational ramp-up is driven by record crude throughput. Crude deliveries to the Lekki complex recently hit an all-time high of 660,000 bpd, supporting a peak jet fuel loading of 550,000 tonnes at its export terminal in June.
Geopolitical shifts have also accelerated European reliance on the West African plant. Amid trade disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz and reduced shipments from regional hubs like Kuwait, the UAE, and Oman, European buyers have turned to Dangote as a reliable alternative that meets international fuel specifications.
“Beyond aviation fuel, the refinery has continued to expand exports of diesel, gasoline and other refined petroleum products to destinations across Europe, Africa and other international markets, further strengthening Nigeria’s position as a net exporter of high-value petroleum products,” said David Bird, Managing Director and CEO of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.
